Understand this lender type
Export financing can involve commercial banks, trade-finance specialists, insurers, and public export agencies. In Canada, EDC offers products including guarantees that can support financing through financial institutions. In the United States, EXIM offers export-related working-capital guarantees. Their rules and eligibility are jurisdiction-specific.
How to assess the fit
Map the transaction from supplier payment to final customer collection. Identify who carries shipping risk, when the buyer accepts the goods, which currency is used, and whether financing is needed before or after shipment. This makes it easier to distinguish a cash advance from credit insurance or a guarantee.
Questions that deserve an answer
Government support does not make an international sale risk-free or a loan automatic. Confirm eligible goods, destinations, counterparties, documentation, exclusions, and lender requirements under the current program. Model currency movements and delayed acceptance. A transaction can appear profitable on the sales invoice while freight, financing, and exchange costs absorb its margin.
Your next-step checklist
- Exporter jurisdiction and program eligibility
- Contract, shipment, and acceptance milestones
- Buyer and currency exposure
- Insurance exclusions and full financing costs
