The financing challenge
SaaS companies may explore working-capital loans, revenue-based funding, venture debt, or equity depending on stage and economics. A lender can assess subscription history, churn, customer concentration, cash runway, and investor support. Annual contract value, recognized revenue, and cash collected are related but distinct measures.
Build the funding case
Model customer acquisition spending and hiring against actual collections. Annual prepaid subscriptions can improve cash today while creating future service obligations. Show gross and net retention, contribution margins, and a realistic path to the milestone the financing supports. Explain which assumptions depend on a later equity raise.
Pressure-test the plan
Debt can shorten runway if growth slows or principal payments start before the next milestone. Review covenants, warrants, revenue definitions, draw conditions, and minimum payment requirements. A headline multiple of recurring revenue does not reveal affordability. Test churn, delayed collections, and a slower fundraising environment before deciding how much borrowing the company can sustain.
Your next-step checklist
- Recurring-revenue definitions and retention
- Cash collections versus accounting revenue
- Runway with interest and principal
- Milestones, covenants, and future-capital assumptions
