The financing challenge
A retailer may use a line for seasonal working capital, term financing for improvements, or equipment finance for fixtures and systems. Inventory can support some structures, but eligibility depends on the lender and the stock’s quality. A purchase order or warehouse balance does not guarantee collateral value.
Build the funding case
Forecast buying, deliveries, sales, returns, and supplier payments by month. Distinguish staple stock from seasonal or speculative items. Show inventory turnover and gross margin after discounts, freight, and shrinkage. If opening another location, separate its costs and ramp from the existing store’s cash requirements.
Pressure-test the plan
Debt payments can fall before the season generates cash. Test slower sell-through and markdowns, especially when inventory becomes less valuable after a holiday or trend passes. Review lease obligations, supplier concentration, and any security already granted over inventory. Avoid using a permanently full credit line as proof that a seasonal borrowing plan is working.
Your next-step checklist
- Inventory aging and sell-through
- Seasonal purchasing and collection calendar
- Margin after returns and markdowns
- Location, supplier, and security commitments
