The financing challenge
Funding may support land, buildings, equipment, livestock, inputs, or operating expenses. In Canada, Farm Credit Canada offers agriculture financing categories. In the United States, USDA Farm Service Agency programs include direct and guaranteed farm loans. Those programs have distinct eligibility rules and should be checked through their official channels.
Build the funding case
Prepare a production budget with input purchases, labor, expected yields or herd performance, selling dates, and debt payments. Separate land and equipment investments from seasonal operating needs. Explain insurance, contracts, storage, and how the business manages commodity-price and weather variability. Historical results help test the reasonableness of the forecast.
Pressure-test the plan
An annual profit estimate can hide a cash gap before harvest or sale. Collateral values, production outcomes, and market prices can all move together. Use conservative downside scenarios and review existing security over crops, livestock, equipment, and property. A government-supported program does not remove underwriting or the obligation to repay.
Your next-step checklist
- Production and seasonal cash budget
- Land, livestock, and equipment obligations
- Insurance and market-risk assumptions
- Current jurisdiction-specific program requirements
Crack this combination.
